Mayson
Designed by Francesco Canovaro released in 2023

Mayson is a humanist sans serif designed by Francesco Canovaro as an experiment in using the texture of Arabic script as a base for designing a matching Latin alphabet. Their common thread is the reference to handmade calligraphy and the use of a flat nib instrument, informing both the fluid and graceful strokes and swooping curves of the arabic script and the humanist open shapes of the Latin. Inspired by the rules of Arabic calligraphy, Latin letterforms adapt to some of its signature elements like sharp nib rotation angles and fluid, non-geometric shapes.

To these elements Francesco Canovaro has added a monolinear, low contrast design principle, that paired with a wide range of weights gives the final family a bold, contemporary look, equally at home in formal business contexts and more playful, creative applications. In this balance of functionalism and human touch Mayson manages to maintain a sense of simplicity and clarity. Mayson's letters are well-proportioned and easy to read, even at smaller sizes, making it an ideal choice for both print and digital projects. Its sleek, modern lines make it versatile and adaptable, able to convey a variety of moods and messages with ease.

Overall, this typeface looks for a novel way of  seamlessly blending two distinct visual languages into a cohesive and compelling whole, giving a warm, inclusive and contemporary vibe. Its unique aesthetic is sure to make it a favorite among designers and type enthusiasts alike.

. The languages only differ in their grammar, their pronunciation and their most common words. Everyone realizes why a new common language would be desirable: one could refuse to pay expensive translators. To achieve this, it would be necessary to have uniform grammar, pronunciation and more common words. If several languages coalesce, the grammar of the resulting language is more simple and regular than that of the individual languages. The new common language will be more simple and regular than the existing European languages. It will be as simple as Occidental; in fact, it will be Occidental. To an English person, it will seem like simplified English, as a skeptical Cambridge friend of mine told me what Occidental is. The European languages are members of the same family.
